II. Salons of the Palais-Royal
Under the arcades of the Palais-Royal one could buy a pamphlet, a lottery ticket, an ice and a revolution, and the Duc de Montclair took rent on all four.
If the Revolution won
When the Duke began to dine at Madame Arnaud's, the lodges opened their doors in his gardens, where no exempt of the Watch would ever knock.
Otherwise
Vaudray's informants took tables in every café of the arcades. The Duke stayed cool toward the salons, and the Crown learned what was said there the same evening.
If the Revolution chose “Pay his debts”
We paid the Duke's debts at faro. He did not thank us; princes never do. But he remembered.
If the Revolution chose “Blackmail him”
We kept the IOUs. The Duke smiled at us in public and hated us in private, which is what an alliance is.
If the Law chose “Pay his debts”
The Crown paid the Duke's debts, and owned him for a season.
Otherwise
The Cabinet Noir kept his IOUs in a drawer, which is where the Cabinet Noir keeps everything.
