The Compact

Both sides switched the Steward off together and sat down at the same table. It is the strangest ending, and the hardest won.

The City

Both sides switched the Steward off together and sat down at the same table. It is the strangest ending, and the hardest won.

Paris is governed by a compact: the Chancellery and the assemblies, the Grid and the blind spots, each watching the other.

The People

Iris Vautrin and Maëlle Okafor share a desk and disagree every day, in public. Lina and Théo Blanc took the last data centre apart, cable by cable, with their crews.

Cendre refused to sign. The Front holds a few streets and argues with everyone.

The Last Night

On the last night of 2049 the two sides held one assembly in the old palace and one in the square at the Bastille, and sent each other the minutes.

Neither side had won. The city had.

The Lamp

The lamp on the corner is lit. Two keys open its box: one kept by the city, one by the neighbourhood.

It was the first lamp in Paris, in 1783, and it is still there.
