IV. Masks at the Opera

In Carnival every face in Paris is a mask, which suited Vaudray, who trusted no face, and La Corneille, who had none.

One way “Masks at the Opera” can end, version 1

The Comte de Vaudray died at a masked ball, in a domino of black silk, and the orchestra played on for a full minute before anyone understood.

One way “Masks at the Opera” can end, version 2

Vaudray's files left the ball in a lady's sleeve. By morning, the names of the Crown's informers were being read aloud in the Palais-Royal.

Otherwise

Vaudray went from ball to ball and lived. At dawn on Ash Wednesday his men had a name for La Corneille, if not yet a face.

If the Revolution chose “Keep the mask”

We kept the wax mask. Within a year, the Brotherhood's new recruits were swearing their oath on it.

If the Revolution chose “Burn it”

We burned the mask in a baker's oven. Symbols, La Corneille said, are for people who want to be caught.

If the Law chose “Publicise the plot”

The Crown published the plot in the Gazette de France. Paris was shocked for two days, and then curious about the Cabinet Noir.

Otherwise

The Cabinet Noir buried the plot. Nothing happened, officially, at the Opera that night.
