V. The Wallpaper Riot
Nobody ever proved that the wallpaper maker of the faubourg Saint-Antoine wanted wages cut. It did not matter: by the evening his house was burning and the Gardes were marching down the street from the Bastille.
If the Revolution won
For four days the faubourg answered to us, and the Bastille, at the end of the street, looked very small.
Otherwise
The faubourg was quiet again within the week. The cost was written in the parish registers and in the eyes of the people who watched.
If the Revolution chose “Blame the factory owner”, or If the Law chose “Blame the factory owner”
In the end we blamed the factory owner. The faubourg agreed with us, which was the point; the merchants did not.
Otherwise
In the end we blamed outside agitators. Every side always does.
