IV. Field of Mars
On a Sunday in July, Parisians walked out to the Field of Mars to sign a petition against the king on the altar of the nation.
If the Revolution won
By evening the petition had six thousand names, and the Assembly could no longer pretend that Paris wanted a king.
Otherwise
The Guard cleared the field without firing a shot. The petition blew away in the wind.
If the Revolution chose “Mourn in public”
The Revolution buried its dead in public, and the city walked behind the coffins.
If the Revolution chose “Plan revenge”
The Revolution buried its dead at night and swore that the Guard's commander would pay.
If the Law chose “Raise the red flag”
The red flag of martial law flew over the Hôtel de Ville for a week. Nobody forgave it.
Otherwise
The red flag stayed furled. Paris was spared that, at least.
