Year of Fire

If the interlude ended this way: Émile opened the armory to the crowd.

In the summer of 1789 a locksmith's boy opened a door, and thirty thousand muskets walked out of the Invalides. The faubourgs had arms. They needed only powder.

Otherwise

In the summer of 1789 a locksmith's boy locked a door, and the muskets of the Invalides stayed where they were. The faubourgs would have to take the powder with their bare hands.

The Estates-General had become a National Assembly, and the Assembly had sworn not to go home until France had a constitution. King Aurèle III sent for his regiments.

In the cafés of the Palais-Royal, a young lawyer named Maximin Vérac listened more than he spoke, and wrote everything down.

The lanterns

If the Revolution won The Blade

The crowds had a new word that summer: 'à la lanterne', to the lamp post. The old ropes that held the lanterns across the streets had been used for something else.

Otherwise

The lamplighters still climbed their ladders at dusk. Under the lanterns, the patrols of the Committee checked everyone's papers.

There were more lamps now than in 1789, and more people looking up at them with fear.
