VI. The Blade

One way “The Palace Falls” can end

The king was tried and executed in January. The Committee of Public Safety governed France from a green room in the Tuileries, and Maximin Vérac governed the Committee.

Otherwise

The monarchy had survived, but only in name. A royal ministry governed in the king's place, with Vérac at its head, and it was not gentler for wearing a crown.

One way “The Blade” can end, version 1

On the ninth of Thermidor the Convention turned on Vérac. He went to the scaffold the next day, in the cart he had sent so many others to.

One way “The Blade” can end, version 2

The Terror ate its own. Vérac's colleagues turned on him, and he fled the city with a forged passport. Nobody knows where he died.

Otherwise

Vérac survived the summer. The conspirators were taken one by one, and the Terror went on in the name of virtue.
