IV. The Ghost

In the small hours a general who was supposed to be in an asylum announced that the Emperor had died in Russia, and for a few hours nobody could prove otherwise.

If the Revolution won

By noon he held the Hôtel de Ville and the ministries, and the Empire had not noticed it was gone. Then the dispatches arrived, dated after the Emperor's death.

Otherwise

By noon the ghost was back in a cell. But for a morning the whole Empire had hung on one man's life, and everyone had seen it.

If the Revolution chose “Print the caricatures”

The prefect in his nightshirt was the most sold print of the winter.

If the Revolution chose “Warn your people to go quiet”

The plotters went quiet and the police found nothing more.

If the Law chose “Dismiss him”

The prefect was dismissed. His successor slept in his boots.

Otherwise

The prefect kept his post, and his name became a joke that lasted a generation.
