The Revolution
Before dawn the president's police went door to door with a list. The Assembly is dissolved, his decrees are on every wall, and the deputies who refuse are being taken to the cells of the Prefecture. I. The Second of December
On the anniversary of his uncle's coronation the prince-president dissolved the Assembly. The deputies who tried to meet were arrested in their beds or in the town hall of the tenth arrondissement.
One way “The December Night” can end
The faubourg rose for once. The barricade in Saint-Antoine held for two days, and enough deputies were still free to sign the proclamation that outlawed the president.
Otherwise
The roundup was complete by morning. The barricades that went up were few, and on the fourth the soldiers fired into the crowds on the boulevards until nobody was left on them.
If the Revolution chose “Make him a martyr”
The deputy who died on the barricade became a name the Republic would carry for twenty years.
If the Revolution chose “Hide the death to avoid panic”
The Republicans hid the deputy's death until the fighting was over. Many thought it had been the wise thing.
If the Law chose “Honour him to calm the city”
The new government buried the dead deputy with honour, and the faubourg did not know what to think.
Otherwise
The dead deputy was not in the official account. His grave was watched for years.
