V. The Exposition

In 1867 the whole world came to the Champ de Mars to see the machines of the Empire.

If the Revolution won

The workers' delegates came too, and went home talking of an International.

Otherwise

It was the Empire's finest summer. Nobody who saw it imagined how little time it had left.

If the Law chose “Crack down on foreigners”

After the shots at the tsar the police emptied the cheap hotels of foreigners.

If the Law chose “Apologise to the tsar”

The emperor apologised to the tsar, and the Russian visit ended with smiles.

If the Revolution chose “Condemn it”

The Republicans condemned the shots at the tsar.

Otherwise

The faubourgs said nothing about the shots at the tsar, which said enough.
