The City
The Law won everything and sees everything. Paris is safe, bright and watched from every lamp post.
There are no blind spots left. There is no crime to speak of, and very little speech.
The People
Iris Vautrin governs with an approval rating the Steward computes. Théo Blanc’s swarms hang over the river like starlings.
Lina was arrested in 2048 and released with a tag on her wallet. Maëlle Okafor’s communes are cooling centres now, with a camera at the door.
The Last Night
On the last night of 2049 the city celebrated with fireworks the Steward timed to the second, and the crowd was counted twice, coming and going.
Nobody threw anything. Nobody needed to be told not to.
The Lamp
The lamp on the corner is lit, and it is a camera now, as every lamp is. It never goes out.
It records the people who stop under it, and almost nobody stops.
