The Burning

Nobody won. The city burned faster than anyone could rule it.

The last booklet

The City

Nobody won. The city burned faster than anyone could rule it: the heat, the water, the fires and the drones took it district by district.

By the end of 2049 no side held more than a corner of Paris.

The People

Iris Vautrin governs from a building at the airport. Cendre is dead, or says she is. Maëlle Okafor runs water to whoever comes.

Lina keeps the last mesh running so that people can find each other. Théo Blanc grounded his swarms and went home.

The Last Night

On the last night of 2049 the old Saint-Antoine road was quiet. People cooked on the pavement, shared what they had, and watched the fires to the west.

It was not the end of the city. It was the end of governing it.

The Lamp

The lamp on the corner is dark. Its glass is broken and its post is bent, as it was in 1789, in 1830, in 1871.

Someone has hung a jar of fireflies on it. It is not much of a light.
