III. The Cloister

For two days a few hundred men held the streets around the cloister of Saint-Merry behind barricades as high as the first floor.

If the Revolution won

They were still there at the end, and the city knew it. The red flag over Saint-Merry became a lithograph in a thousand rooms.

Otherwise

The guns came up the Rue Saint-Martin and the cloister fell house by house. The survivors were tried in autumn.

One way “The Cloister” can end

Lucien got out through a cellar and was back in his lecture hall in October, with a scar and a story.

Otherwise

Lucien Marchal was not among the prisoners. His mother came to the morgue every morning for a week.
