Jean-Luc Barral, theatre director
Jean-Luc Barral was an actor before he was a director, and a great one: the stage of his theatre has seen him as kings, clowns and madmen. He has run the theatre for years as a national stage that brings the classics to people who never went to the theatre, and he has done it with packed houses.
In May the students marched into his auditorium and declared it free. They sat in his seats, spoke from his stage and hung a red and black flag from his balcony. Barral believes in the young, in theatre and in speech, and he cannot quite bring himself to call the police on any of them. The ministry is waiting for him to choose.
