Léon Bastien, news anchor
Léon Bastien was a radio reporter during the liberation of Paris, broadcasting from a rooftop with a borrowed microphone while the shooting went on below him. When the state's first television channel needed a face for the evening news, it chose his: trustworthy, a little tired, with the voice everyone remembered.
Every evening he reads the news the ministry has checked, in a studio the size of a kitchen, to a country that buys its first television sets to watch him. He is careful, decent and increasingly uneasy about what he is not allowed to say. He has never yet put down his notes.
