Charles-Louis Lamaury, the Eagle's nephew
Charles-Louis Lamaury grew up in exile, raised by his mother in a rented villa in Tuscany on stories of an uncle he barely remembered. He learned three languages, a little artillery and a great deal about how a name can be spent. When the Republic of 1848 opened the vote to every man, he came home and spent it.
He was elected president by millions of peasants who had never heard him speak, and in December 1851 he dissolved the Assembly that stood in his way. A plebiscite approved it, and another made him emperor a year later. He is quiet, dreamy and patient, he believes in railways, banks and wide straight streets, and he governs by asking the whole country questions to which it can only answer yes.
