André Citrange, shell-factory magnate
André Citrange is the son of a Lyon silk dyer, an engineer who made his first fortune in gears and bicycle chains and is convinced that anything can be made on a line. In 1915 the ministry needed shells by the million. Citrange offered to build a factory for them in La Villette, and to have it running in four months.
It ran in three. His works turn out tens of thousands of shells a day, with canteens and doctors on site, and with women on the lines because the men are at the front. He is charming, inventive and very rich, and he negotiates his contracts with the ministry like a man who knows the war cannot be fought without him.
