Paul Darrieux, interior minister

Paul Darrieux was a small-town mayor in the south-west, a former rugby player and a good friend of the President's from the early days of the movement. He was given the Interior Ministry as a reward for loyalty, and he has learned on the job.

Every Saturday he watches the demonstrations on a wall of screens in the ministry's command room, and every Sunday he gives the figures on television: so many arrests, so many injured police. He believes order is the first freedom. The figures of injured demonstrators are given by others, and he has stopped watching those programmes.
