Casimir Delorme
Casimir Delorme began as a clerk in a Lyon silk house and became, in twenty years, the man the government calls when it needs money. He finances canals, mines and, since the late 1830s, the first railway lines out of Paris, and he sits on the boards of the companies he finances.
He has a simple philosophy, which he repeats to anyone who complains that only property can vote: get rich, and you will vote too. His house in the new quarter behind the boulevards has a picture gallery, a glass conservatory and a dining room where ministers are appointed between courses.
