Germaine Dorval
Germaine Dorval was the most talked-about hostess of the Directory, a Lyon silk merchant's daughter with a fortune of her own, a tongue to match it and essays that every minister read before breakfast. She believed in liberty, in conversation and in her own judgement, roughly in that order.
Lamaury could not abide her and had her ordered out of the capital. She settled in a rented house by a lake across the frontier and turned her house into the meeting place of every pen the new regime had silenced. Her letters and pamphlets come back into Paris in diplomatic bags, sewn into hat linings, and in the memories of guests who were there.
