Héloïse Marchand, schoolteacher
Héloïse Marchand grew up in a Picardy village, the daughter of the schoolmistress, and came to Paris to teach. She opened a free school for girls in Belleville in the 1860s, taught reading, arithmetic and natural history, and made her pupils' mothers welcome in the evenings.
During the siege she joined a women's vigilance committee and ran a field ambulance with two doctors and a cart. She wears a red scarf, speaks in the clubs that meet in the churches, and believes that the Commune is the first government that has ever asked her opinion. She has no intention of giving it back.
