Jérôme Kessel, trader
Jérôme Kessel grew up in a small town in the east, the son of a pharmacist, and came to Paris with a doctorate in mathematics and no idea what to do with it. A bank hired him straight from his thesis to build the models that price things nobody can touch.
Now he trades on his own models, from a screen in a tower at La Défense, betting the bank's money on the movements of markets that move faster every year. He earns more in a good month than his father in a year. Like many people in the towers in 2007, he does not quite understand what he is selling, and he has stopped asking.
