Octave Lamaury, the Eagle
Octave Lamaury was a gunner's son from the eastern garrisons, commissioned in the last years of the old army and promoted at a speed only a revolution allows. He was a general at twenty-six. His men called him the Eagle after a campaign in the mountains, and the name stuck when the newspapers took it up.
He is short of sleep, of patience and of illusions, and long on everything else. He reads everything, forgets nothing, and has a gift for making each man in a room believe he is the one being spoken to. He came back from Egypt with a legend already printed and a plan already drawn. The councils knew it, and so did the city.
