Louis-Ferdinand, the Citizen King
Louis-Ferdinand came to the throne by way of a balcony and a tricolour flag, after three days of July barricades sent his cousin back into exile. He had spent the Empire on his estates in the Loire, running them like a business, and he let it be known that he understood money.
The Citizen King walks to Mass on foot, sends his sons to the public schools and pretends not to mind the caricaturists who draw him on every wall. Behind the smile stands a careful, acquisitive man who trusts bankers more than voters and believes the people should be governed by those who own enough to vote.
