Madeleine Aubry, clandestine printer

Madeleine Aubry was a typographer in her father's print shop near the canal until the occupation closed it. She kept the type. In a cellar behind a laundry she now prints a clandestine paper on a hand press, two pages, every fortnight, with poems by writers who sign with the names of rivers.

Students fold it, couriers carry it in shopping bags and children's satchels, and readers leave it on the metro after they have read it. She has moved the press four times. She is cheerful, meticulous and very tired, and she knows that if the police ever find the cellar, the paper's next issue will be about her.
