Marguerite

After the finale of chapter 4: Barricade SummersBreak the seal

Marguerite trained as a miniature painter, the trade of ivory portraits in lockets, and saw its future go dark in a single season when the first camera pictures were shown in 1839. Instead of mourning it she bought a camera, a box of silvered copper plates and a room with a skylight near the Palais-Royal.

Her sitters must hold still for minutes, their heads clamped in iron stands, so her best pictures are of things that do not move: buildings, empty streets, barricades after the fighting. In 1848 she began to carry her camera into the city, and the plates she brought back were the first true pictures Paris had ever seen of itself at war.
