Aristide Morel, poet in exile

Aristide Morel is a printer's son from Lille who became the most quoted poet of his generation and, in 1849, a deputy of the left. When the coup of December 1851 came, he was arrested with dozens of other deputies, held for a month in a fortress and put on a train to the frontier.

From Brussels and from a windswept island beyond it, he writes verse that calls the emperor a thief of the Republic, and it comes back into Paris folded small inside coat linings and hat bands. He refused every amnesty offered him: he will come home, he says, when the Republic does.
