Natalia Kerr, a spy
Natalia Kerr says she was born in Riga, or in Trieste, or on a ship between the two, depending on who is paying for dinner. She translates for a trade delegation, has a flat near the Champ de Mars and a talent for being at the parties where secrets are spent.
Paris in the 1950s is full of people who sell what they know: to the East, to the West, to the newspapers, to the police. Natalia sells to all of them and has never been caught lying, which in her trade is the same as never lying. She is clever, amused and very lonely, and she has begun to wonder whether any of her buyers will protect her when they no longer need her.
