Henri Sauvel, union leader

Henri Sauvel is a railway fitter who joined the union at sixteen and the Resistance at eighteen, and came out of the war certain of one thing: the working class must never again be divided. He has led his union for a decade with discipline, patience and an instinct for the moment when a strike becomes a victory.

He distrusts the students: their slogans, their contempt for the party, their certainty that they have invented revolt. He also knows that their nights on the barricades have woken the factories as nothing else could. Ten million workers are on strike, and he has to decide what they will take home when it ends.
