Simone, switchboard operator at the Chamber of Deputies
After the finale of chapter 7: Home FiresBreak the seal
Simone came to Paris from the Morvan at sixteen and learned the switchboard at the post office, where the operators were all young women and all called by their numbers. Her quick hands and perfect memory got her a seat at the Chamber of Deputies, where she connects ministers, deputies and newspapers all day long.
She hears everything and repeats nothing, which is why she has kept the post. In the early 1930s the crash in America had reached Paris, a financial scandal had reached the government, and the leagues of the extreme right were marching on the boulevards in berets and uniforms. On the night of the sixth of February 1934, every call in Paris seemed to pass through her board.
