Adolphe Thibert, head of the government at Versailles

Adolphe Thibert has been a minister under two regimes and an opponent of a third, and he is proud of having been right about all of them. A notary's son from Burgundy who made his fortune in politics, he is quick, vain and very hard to tire, and he has spent forty years believing that order is the first condition of liberty.

In February 1871, after the defeat, the newly elected Assembly made him head of the government. Paris had voted against the peace, against the Assembly and against him. When the attempt to take back the National Guard's cannon failed in March, he withdrew the army and the ministries to Versailles, to retake the city from outside rather than lose it from within.
