Thierry Valcourt, interior minister, then President
Thierry Valcourt is a former sports-goods executive who went into local politics in the Loire valley and rose through his party by winning every congress he entered and every television debate he was invited to. He is fast, tireless and impossible to embarrass, and he has made the Interior Ministry the most visible job in the government.
He promises results, and measures them: arrests, cameras installed, anti-crime brigades sent into the estates beyond the ring road. He speaks to the voters who are afraid, and he does it in their words, sometimes in words his own colleagues would never use. He wants the presidency, and he has never pretended otherwise.
