Yann, a student
After the finale of chapter 9: Cold LightBreak the seal
Yann is a fisherman's son from the Breton coast, the first of his family to sit a baccalaureate and the first to set foot in a university. The university is a new one, raised in a few years on old army land at the city's western edge, with a tower, a library, glass walls and, across the road, a shanty town of migrant workers living in mud.
He studies sociology, the newest of the subjects, and finds it full of answers to questions nobody on the campus is allowed to ask. The dormitories are forbidden to visitors of the other sex, the war on the television is never mentioned in the lecture halls, and Yann has discovered that he can make a crowd laugh.

Yann Morel, student
By the spring of 1968 Yann Morel has become the student everybody has heard of: insolent, fast and impossible to pin down, the voice of the assemblies that take over the faculties one after another. He belongs to no party and mocks them all, which the parties do not forgive.
The poster workshops print his slogans before he has finished saying them. The amphitheatres are occupied and never empty, and he sleeps in them, when he sleeps. He wants to change life, not just the government, and he has not decided whether the workers in the factories will follow the students or the students will have to follow them.
