Adèle
After the finale of chapter 5: Straight LinesBreak the seal
Adèle is nineteen, the daughter of a cab driver from La Chapelle, and a seamstress since she was twelve. In September 1870 the Prussian armies closed around Paris and the post stopped. The government turned the great railway stations into balloon workshops, and Adèle went to sew envelopes of varnished cotton at the Gare du Nord.
Sailors were taught to fly the balloons, because they knew ropes and wind. Adèle watched, asked questions and went up on the tethered training flights until the instructors stopped pretending she was there to mend the fabric. By the winter the city was eating its horses and the animals of the zoo, and every balloon that left carried letters, carrier pigeons and someone the city could not do without.
