Louis Brancard
Louis Brancard was a foreman in a bronze foundry of the Marais until he was dismissed for organising a strike chest. Since then he has spoken in every workshop that would have him: work, he says, is a right, and a republic owes it to the men who built the barricades. Employers hear him with horror and the faubourgs with hope.
He is small, quick and tireless, a speaker who can hold a hall for two hours on the price of a day's labour. The secret societies trust him a little and the workshops a great deal. He wants the Republic, the right to work and no bloodshed, and he has not yet had to choose between them.
