Claire passed her magistrate's examinations in 1942, the youngest in her year, and spent the occupation in a junior post that judged burglaries and black-market cases. She refused to sit on the special courts, which cost her a promotion and saved her name.
In August 1944 the city rose and the occupier left, and the new authorities needed someone untainted to hold the Prefecture's archives: the denunciations, the informers' pay slips, the lists. Claire is twenty-six. Outside, crowds are shaving women's heads and settling old scores without trials, and she believes that justice must be done slowly to be done at all.
