Chapter 1 The Gilded Cage 1783 to 1789
Queen Isaure
Isaure was a provincial duke's daughter, chosen for the heir because her family belonged to no faction at court, which made her the target of all of them. She was a stranger at Versailles before she was queen, and the court made her pay for it in the only coin it trusts: gossip.
She loves music, riding and long summers at the coast, and she spends on all three in years when bread is dear, which the pamphleteers of the Palais-Royal never tire of saying. Every feast of Sainte-Isaure the court expects a celebration worthy of her name. She would give it up gladly, her ladies say, if anyone believed she meant it.
Chapter 2 Year of Fire 1789 to 1794
Chapter 2: Year of FireSealed so it does not spoil the story for you.Break the seal
Queen Isaure
By 1789 Isaure had become the face the city put on everything it hated about the Crown. Songs about her were sold for a sou, and engravings that no printer would sign. She stopped reading them; her household did not.
She was braver than her husband and more stubborn, and she trusted the wrong people more readily than the right ones. Through the Year of Fire she wrote to every provincial governor who still answered her letters, convinced that help would come from somewhere. What the year left her is played out in the chapter, not here.
