Georges Kerval
Georges Kerval is a notary's son from Anjou, slight, short-sighted and much harder to frighten than he looks. He fought the Republic in the hedgerows of the west through the 1790s, lost two brothers, and was never caught. The royalist princes in London made him a general by letter; he never asked them for anything else.
In Paris he hides in plain sight, a provincial grain merchant with a room near Les Halles and a different coat each week. His men are veterans of the western wars, émigrés' couriers and paid adventurers. He wants the king back and does not much care who has to die for it, beginning with himself.
