Lina, trust-and-safety engineer
After the finale of chapter 12: SaturdaysBreak the seal
Lina grew up in a flat above her parents' grocery in Belleville and taught herself to code at fourteen on a second-hand laptop. She studied computer science on a scholarship and went straight to Murmur, the platform where by the end of the decade every movement, every ministry and every grandmother in the country had an account.
Her team writes the rules that decide what people see: what is boosted, what is buried, what is flagged. She believed for a long time that she was protecting people. In the early 2030s Murmur signs a contract with the State, and Lina reads it before most of the people who will live under it.

Lina, once of Murmur
Whatever she did with the contract in 2032, Lina left Murmur soon after, and has spent the years since learning the Grid from the inside out: its cameras, its drones, the way its forecasts decide where the police will be tomorrow.
She now leads crews of former engineers, students and repairers who open blind spots in the city's surveillance, keep its drones on the ground and publish what the Steward does not. She is forty, careful, and more patient than she used to be, and she knows the system's weaknesses because some of them are hers.
