Lucie belongs to one of the families that have held the office of executioner for generations, passed down like a forge or a farm. Nobody will marry into such families, so they marry among themselves; shops refuse their money, and their pew at church stands apart.
Her father works the new machine on the square; Lucie keeps the register, in a clear round hand, of every name the tribunals send him and every date. She has read thousands of names in that register and knows more about the Terror than most of the men who run it. She has also begun to recognise some of the names.
