Marshal MacMorne
Marshal MacMorne comes from an old military family of Brittany. He has spent his life in the army, has been wounded more often than he will say, and has never in his life voted for anything.
The war of 1870 ended with most of the regular army in enemy prison camps. In the spring the prisoners were sent home, and MacMorne was given them to rebuild an army at Versailles: men who had been beaten, starved and humiliated, and who had heard from their officers that Paris had stabbed them in the back. He is not cruel. He is obedient, and he has been ordered to win.
