Marthe Rivière, union organiser at a shell factory
Marthe Rivière was a milliner's hand in the Sentier until 1915, when her husband was killed on the front and the shell factories began hiring women at twice the wage of a seamstress. She has worked twelve-hour shifts filling shells with explosives ever since; her hands and face are stained yellow, like those of every woman in her shed.
In 1917 she was elected a shop steward, the first in her factory. She is blunt, funny and impossible to bully, and the women of the sheds follow her because she tells them the truth about their pay and the men's. They want the same wage for the same work, a Saturday afternoon off, and the war to end. The union men in the old trades are not sure they want all three.
