Samir Haddad, youth worker
Samir Haddad grew up in Les Bosquets, an estate of tower blocks beyond the ring road, where his parents arrived in the 1970s and where he still lives. He was a good student who did not get into the schools he applied to, and a good footballer who got injured, and at twenty-five he became a youth worker on the estate.
He runs a homework club, a football team and a room where young people can talk without being told to move along. He knows every family in his block and every police patrol by sight. He has spent years telling the young that anger must be organised to be heard, and he is beginning to fear that nobody outside the estate is listening.
