Chancellor Iris Vautrin, head of government
Iris Vautrin is a climate scientist who entered politics after the great heat of the late 2030s, when the city counted its dead by the thousand and the government had no plan. She was elected on a promise of competence, and she has kept it, mostly.
As Chancellor she governs a city that floods in winter and burns in summer, with a budget she has partly handed to the Steward because it makes fewer mistakes than her ministers. She is cool, exact and very tired, and she believes that democracy will survive the century only if it learns to let machines do what machines do better. She is no longer sure where that line is.
