General Maurice Vernier
Maurice Vernier is a schoolteacher's son from Lorraine, a staff officer who planned more campaigns than he led and earned a name as the coldest mind in the army. He came out of the war with the prestige of the liberators, a seat on every commission that rebuilt the country, and a contempt for parties that he never troubled to hide.
He believes France needs a head of state who can act, and parliaments that can be ignored. When the governments of the 1950s fell one after another over a war overseas, the deputies turned to the one general the army would obey. Vernier asked for a new constitution with a strong President at its heart, got it, and became that President.

President Maurice Vernier
Ten years on, the President is old. He has given the country a new franc, a bomb of its own and a voice of its own in the world, and he cannot understand why its children are throwing paving stones at the police. He talks about the students as a father talks about a fever.
He governs from the palace through his Prime Minister and appears on television to speak to the nation, standing very straight. The country he rebuilt has new suburbs, new cars, new universities and a generation that wants something none of them provide. He is not sure what it is. Neither, entirely, are they.
