Alphonse Delisle
Alphonse Delisle is a professor of political economy and a deputy whose speeches every minister fears. He comes from minor provincial gentry, believes in God, the nation and an honest parliament, and has spent a decade asking for a wider franchise in prose so fine that nobody could quite say no to it, or yes.
He leads the liberal opposition from the benches and the banquets: from 1847, when public meetings were banned, his friends held subscription dinners instead, with toasts that were speeches. He is brave in front of a crowd and uneasy in the faubourgs, where the men want work as well as votes.
