Émile

Émile was born above a farrier's shop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and apprenticed at twelve to a locksmith who happened to serve the king. He learned to cut keys from wax impressions, to listen without being noticed and to keep his mouth shut, the last of these less well than the others.

In the summer of 1789 the price of bread was the highest anyone could remember, and the city had begun to look for arms. Émile had made copies of keys he should not have kept, among them one to an armory where thousands of muskets waited for a crowd that did not yet know they were there.

Émile

After the finale of chapter 3: The Eagle's ShadowBreak the seal

Twenty years on, Émile works for the inspectorate of quarries, which has spent a generation shoring up the old stone workings under the south of the city after whole streets fell into them. He has walked those galleries for years, by lamp and by memory, and drawn a map nobody else has.

Part of the galleries now holds the bones of the old cemeteries, moved there at night by cartloads. Smugglers use the rest, and so do men who want to come and go under the barriers unseen. A complete map would be worth a fortune to any of them, and a death sentence to whoever owned it.
