Georges Lamarre
Georges Lamarre was a successful barrister in Tours, a reader of the English papers and an admirer of their parliament. Elected in 1789, he wanted a king bound by a constitution, a free press and an assembly of property owners, and he believed in all three with the fervour other men keep for religion.
He is generous, eloquent and slow to see danger. In the Assembly he led the deputies who hoped the Revolution could stop at the point where they had arrived. Each month of the Year of Fire moved that point a little further than he had meant it to go, and each month his friends in the galleries grew fewer.
