General Eugène Lavergne
Eugène Lavergne is a Norman farmer's son who joined the army as a drummer boy in the last winter of the Empire and rose from the ranks. He made his name in long, unglamorous campaigns and came home a general with a hard face, republican sympathies and a reputation for doing what he was told, completely.
He dislikes using the army in the streets and says so, and his officers like him for it. The government trusts him for the same reason: a republican general who clears barricades is harder to accuse of tyranny than a royalist one. He has not yet been asked to prove it.
