Lucien Marchal
Lucien Marchal is twenty, a law student from a family of drapers in the Marais, and he has read more about the Year II than about the law. He joined one of the secret societies in his first winter in Paris, swore its oath over a dagger in a cellar, and was given a password and a cartridge box.
In the cholera spring of 1832 he carried the sick to the hospitals with his friends from the Latin Quarter, and he came out of it convinced that a government which let the poor die like that deserved to fall. He is funny, generous and absolutely certain, which his mother finds the most frightening of the three.
